Meanwhile\, Troy is forced to go on a solo date with Ka tie's sister (Stacy)\, with their stepfather as a chaperone. After a ni ce meal of mac and cheese\, the Stepfather takes them to a party where T roy gets in a fight with Stacy's ex-boyfriend and later hustles the Step father and his friends in a game of poker.Back at the apartment\, things start to heat up with Jason and Katie. Jason decides that he must tell her the truth before things go any further\, however\, he quickly gets swept up in a moment of passion and is unable to come clean.As soon as w ord spreads around the office that Katie and Jason are a couple\, everyo ne starts to look at Jason differently. The women find him much more at tractive and the men think of him as a god. But not everyone is quite a s thrilled with Katie and Jason's relationship. Katie's friend (Denise) meets Jason at a bar and tries to break them up by setting up Katie wit h people who are more like her. Rich and good looking men who in Denise 's eyes are much better than an average nice guy. When that plan fails\, Denise decides to take Katie to a meeting at Hot Chicks Anonymous. Whe re women who think they are beautiful confide in one another about how t ough it is being gorgeous. This is the last straw for Katie as she real izes that Denise and her are two different people. Katie has grown up i n life\, but Denise is still focused on a high school girl's mentality.A fter another double date\, Stacy makes a move on Troy at the end of the night. This forces Jason and Troy to quickly grab a drink at a bar wher e they both decide that they are going to hell. And Jason decides that tomorrow he is definitely going to tell Katie the truth about everything . Troy ends up staying later at the bar because he doesn't want to reme mber the night\, and he ends up meeting a lovely lady (Erica)\, who was recently dumped by her boyfriend. Troy and Erica have an immediate co nnection and after spending the whole night out on the town\, Erica take s Troy back to her apartment. Unfortunately for Troy and Jason\, Erica' s roommate is Katie. Troy gets caught and has to come clean about every thing.Troy quickly makes it back to the apartment to warn Jason before K atie shows up to kill him or at least do some major physical damage. Ja son tries to explain himself to Katie and the reasons why he lied to her \, but it is far too little too late and Katie breaks up with him. Jason ends up spending all night thinking about how he can fix everything. H e decides that the first thing he should do is let Erica know that the i dea was all his and that she should forgive Troy. Jason then turns his a ttention to try and salvage his relationship with Katie.After a few fail ed attempts to talk to her at work\, Jason gives up all hope. Later on\ , Troy gets a text from Erica that she wants to talk with him. She ends up forgiving him\, and on his way out her place he ends up running into Katie\, again. She tells him that he has to break up with Stacy becau se it would devastate her if she found out the whole thing was a big lie . However\, when Troy goes to talk to Stacy\, she ends up breaking up w ith him first and letting him know that he should freshen up his breath before someone gets hurt.Jason's friends force him to get out of bed and come out with them. At the bar\, Erica and Troy have set it up so that Jason and Katie will meet. Katie wants no part of the conversation and quickly leaves the bar when she sees Jason. He follows her out to her car to try one last attempt to get her back. The film follows a week in the life of Laura\, a you ng waitress living at home with her widowed mother. During the week the film takes place\, Laura's mother's car os stuck in the shop\, and Laura is without a car for the week. As the film opens\, Laura is kicked out of a concrete yard\, where she stops on her way home from work to sneak a cigarette. Upon arriving home\, she hears that Nick\, her best friend' s ex\, has called the house and wants to speak with her. Laura agrees to meet him at the local luncheonette\, where she is known and liked by it s friendly owner\, Al. Nick\, obviously distraught\, pressures Laura for information on why his heart has been recently broken. When asked if As hley\, Laura's best friend\, is seeing someone else\, Laura reluctantly lies. Disgusted\, Nick storms out of the cafe. Days later\, Laura seeks a ride home from work with Ashley and her new boy toy\, the mysterious\, lowly looking\, Pete. When they arrive to pick her up\, she asks her bo ss if she can leave. The problem is that her coverage has not arrived ye t. So the three of them get stuck waiting at the bar/burger joint for lo nger than Pete is comfortable with. On the way home\, Pete takes a detou r to go 'do something'. He pulls into a dark\, mysterious parking lot\, grabs an envelope out of the glove compartment\, and\, despite the girls ' protests\, leaves them in the car\, and disappears into the darkness. A long\, uncomfortable moment later\, shots are fired\, and Laura and As hley's worlds are turned upside down. In a moment of uncontrolled panic\ , they burst out of the car and run off through the woods. Emerging in a residential neighborhood\, Laura begs Ashley to tell her who this 'Pete ' guy is and how she got mixed up with him. To emotional to answer\, Ash ley can't bring herself to speak about it. Then\, her cell phone rings. It's Pete. He's been shot and needs help. Ashley runs back to help him\, insisting that Laura go home and that she'll be fine. Realizing that tr ying to help her is a lost cause\, Laura reluctantly lets her go\, and w alks home\, alone. Days later\, Laura notices\, at work\, the concrete w orker that kicked her out of the yard. She approaches his table\, flirta tious as their first encounter\, and\, with the help of the vodka she ha d snuck into her water bottle\, has a drunken-good time with her newly f ound friend. The second half of the film is a love story between two dif ferent people\, both 'lost' and looking for companionship in a harsh Ame rican landscape. Through all of the characters' experiences\, a sense of aimlessness\, hopelessness\, and powerlessness floats in the air. The f ilm is largely about the middle class' struggle to simply 'be happy' in a time of low wages\, high gas prices\, a decaying economy\, and a gener al public apathy for each other. As the story meanders on\, Laura nurtur es those relationships worth preserving\, and severs the ones that aren' t. By the time the film ends\, Laura has learned a few things about the faults and virtues of depending on other people\, as well as love\, loss \, and middle class life in rough times. Unlike many films which aim to hide the environment in which they take place\, Lost and Gone forever ai ms to be specific in its setting. As much as it is about character and p lot\, it is about time and place\, specifically\, the suburban middle cl ass struggle circa 2008.
